What is Contrast Therapy?

Contrast Therapy, also know as Hot and Cold Immersion Therapy, combines the use of saunas & ice baths/cold plunges, to provide incredible benefits for the human body.

Benefits

Improved Circulation

Heat causes vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels), which increases blood flow to the area being treated. This process enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues while aiding in the removal of metabolic waste products, such as lactic acid. The cold reduces blood flow temporarily, which can help reduce swelling and inflammation. The rapid shift back to warmth causes a rush of blood back into the area, improving circulation even more.

Reduced Muscle Soreness

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), is common after intense physical activity. This soreness is primarily due to micro-tears in muscle fibres, inflammation, and the accumulation of lactic acid. The intense cold helps to reduce muscle temperature, slowing down metabolic processes and also numbs the area, providing pain relief and reducing inflammation. The heat of the sauna helps relax any tight muscles, reducing stiffness and improving flexibility. By alternating between hot and cold, contrast therapy can alleviate muscle soreness more effectively than using either method alone.

Stress Relief & Relaxation

Heat therapy is known for its calming effects on both the body and mind. The warmth soothes sore muscles, reduces muscle spasms, and promotes a sense of relaxation. While cold exposure might initially seem counterintuitive for relaxation, it actually stimulates the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters that enhance mood and reduce stress. Cold can also have an invigorating effect, helping to clear the mind and increase alertness.

Boosted Immune Function

Improved circulation from contrast therapy can enhance the delivery of immune cells to areas where they are needed, promoting a more effective immune response. Heat increases blood flow, which can help stimulate the production and circulation of white blood cells. The increased metabolic activity induced by heat can help the body mobilise its defences against infections. The cold exposure stimulates the production of norepinephrine, a hormone that plays a role in immune function.
